The soon to be emperor resident at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in New Rome Washington DC has just appointed as Pontiff Science Advisor John Holdren, a member of the College of Cardinals of the Warmista sect of the Green Religion Harvard faculty of environmental policy. By making this appointment according to the New York Times, the Marxist Messiah "...Pledges Allegiance to Science". This humble writer begs to differ.

The warmista sect bases its dogmas exclusively on the projections generated by computer models and asserts that this is "science". Computer modeling is by no means science. The generation of projections by computer modeling while useful for limited applications does not qualify as science:

A simple single word definition of science is the ability to predict. It is not used by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), yet they present their work as scientific predictions. Media and the public generally believe the IPCC is making predictions and that is clearly the assumption for government policies. Sadly, members of the IPCC do nothing to dissuade the public from that view. All previous “projections” were wrong. The most recent example is the period from 2000 to 2008. IPCC predicted warming but temperatures went down while CO2 increased. Finally, the IPCC AR4 itself explains why IPCC model projections fail.

“Models continue to have significant limitations, such as in their representation of clouds, which lead to uncertainties in the magnitude and timing, as well as regional details, of predicted climate change.” (AR4, Chapter 8. p.600)

It is hard to imagine a better example of Beadle’s axiom paraphrased as follows, “Half the work done by the IPCC is to make things appear what they are not.”

The warmistas dismiss the global cooling that has been objectively measured during the last decade as a "mere interruption due to la niña of the long term warming trend caused by human CO2 emissions". If this is the case, why have not the computer models predicted it since they are "reliable enough" to provide the basis for extreme government regulatory actions? Another glaring flaw common to virtually all of the computer models relied upon by the warmistas is the total absence of any factoring in of solar output variations as they have impacted previous changes in climate.

For these reasons as well as others I would assert that congressional confirmation of Professor Holdren's appointment as "Science Advisor" is a violation of the Establishment clause of the First Amendment to Constitution: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion...". Religion is defined as: "3. A set of [unprovable] beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader [i.e. Al Gore]" who was consulted prior to the Holdren appointment.

Another One Bites the Dust?

There are several emerging factors that lead this blogger to conclude that the long visible light at the end of the global warming cum climate change hoax tunnel is growing larger and it is obviously not the oncoming train of catastrophic sea level rise.

1. Your humble scribbler was required to fire up the wood stove 10 full days earlier than last year. Unscientific you say? No more so than the female journalist in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution reporting on recent heavy rains along the Gulf coast using the statement: "These flood producing heavy rains from Texas to Tallahassee simply scream of global warming".

2. The shrillness of the warmista religionists in hurling invective at any and all of the increasing number of climate and geological scientists who posit that no global cataclysm is immanent as a result of climate change. The following is a partial list of the epithets used to describe the growing number of so called "deniers": extremist denier, moron, rank amateur, stupid, pimp, liar, pseudo scientists, malpractitioners, right wing, bastards etc.

3. The calls to hush and censor scientists and others who have, on the basis of emperical data recanted their belief that human activity has had any significant negative impact on global climate change as evidenced by Joseph Romm in Climate Progress who states the following: "Modern journalists from traditional media have for years made the mistake of balancing stories on the reality [?] of accelerating human-caused global warming with a quote or two from deniers, though some are starting to do that less."
On his blog "Gristmill", David Roberts makes the following statement: "...we should have war crimes trials for these bastards -- some sort of climate Nuremberg."

4. And NOW, this just in (ht/¡No Pasarán!):

German Chancellor Angela Merkel faced calls from fellow conservatives Sunday to fight to water down a European Union climate pact until the recession-wracked economy is moving again.

Bavarian premier Horst Seehofer said in an interview with the Bild am Sonntag newspaper that he had written to Merkel calling on her to back away from EU climate protection goals to be approved next month for a time.

Added bonus:

German Economy Minister Michael Glos, also of the Christian Social Union, the Bavarian sister party of Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, agreed that Germany could ill-afford to make a priority of climate protection with the economy hobbled by the global financial crisis.

"It is not the time to burden the economy with excessive environmental targets," he said.

Perhaps we can add the warmista religion to the list of doctrines that have vanished by being "overtaken by events"?

"Congress Must ACT"???

Last Monday, June 2nd, Senator Harry Reid (D Nevada) assured us: "It's clear that "global warming is real" and Congress must act." Wow! Senator Reid has always appeared to this writer to be a profound thinker with astonishing intellectual and logic gifts, (irony alert) but the preceding statement is so profound as to boggle the mind. What next may we expect; "Tectonic movement and continental drift are real and Congress must act."? While such a discussion may appear hyperbolic, if collectivist politicians perceived an opportunity to devise a tax or regulation which would benefit themselves, a governmental bureaucracy or a deep pocketed constituency, appropriate legislation would begin wending its way through the ozlike congressional labyrinth.

In a previous post I alluded to the "pork barrel" nature of the subject of the present debate on S 2191 a legislative "cap and trade" mandate to affect a regression of the US economy to pre industrial levels by the year 2050. In determining the motives behind such a proposal, the most important question to ask is: "qui bono" ( who benefits?). Consider the implication of the following report from Reuters:

"Generation Investment Management, an investor in green firms chaired by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, has bought a 9.6 percent stake in UK-listed Camco International Ltd, Camco said on Wednesday.

The stake is worth around 6.4 million pounds ($12.59 million) at Camco's current price of 40 pence a share.

While Gore, a politician turned environmental activist chairs Generation Investment, David Blood, a former CEO of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, is managing partner of the firm, which was founded four years ago."

Generation Investment Management is a cap and trade brokerage firm that Mr. Gore uses to "offset" the huge "carbon footprint" generated by his personal lifestyle and globetrotting activities to hype the catastrophic environmental consequences of man made global warming (e.g. the recently revealed warmista religion). Mr Gore has consistently refused to debate the validity of the tenets of his new religion with credited scientists such as Lord Moncton and a 15 year old honor student who question the computer generated dogmas of the warmista doctrine. To quote one wag on the efficacy of computer modeling for future climate change: "garbage in, dogma out". Gore simply states: "There is no need to debate. The science is settled". This reminds us of the "settled science" of the geocentric universe insisted on by religious and political leaders in the 14th century.

Not Alone?

For many of us Americans who see individual liberty slipping away on a global scale most depressing is the news and comment coming from our so called co-culturists in Europe. They appear to be willing nay, eager, to go quietly into the dark night of tyranny and oppression as engendered in Islam and its enabler, leftist collectivism. The mainstream media, acting as the voice of the political elite, incessantly bombards us with the need to surrender more and more of our liberties to that elite in order to address the ephemeral crisis de jour be it islamaphobia, racism, fascism or global warming.

Thanks to the alternative media we are able to learn of the existence of European opposing voices. One such voice is a Swedish author, journalist and blogger whose opinions are excluded from the traditional outlets. His name is Kurt Lundgren and he posts in Swedish on his blog Östra Ölands fria horisont. The following is a translation of his posting on 15 December

The Theory of Climate Change is the Road to Slavery:

Thanks to the United States, Europe was saved from communism even though many did their best to assist in a Soviet take over. [Olof] Palme's proposed nuclear-free zone in Europe for example, was tantamount to a policy of nuclear weapons for the communists, but no nuclear weapons for democracies.

The USA can again save the free world. How? By rejecting the worst of the climate-nuts and not submitting to the proposed climate treaties.
The anthropogenic global warming idea is by far the most dangerous theory ever put forward. Not even Lenin's sharp mind, before he was completely demented, could have conceived a idea which would give politicians more power over the masses. Lenin's theory of conquering the commanding heights of society has by way of the AGW theory reached a refinement and status which is obvious to all except the intellectually obtuse.

The AGC theory gives the politicians reasons and the rationale for taxation we have never witnessed. The theory gives them control of all facets of our lives; how we are to be born; what we may eat; if we are fat or slim. It penetrates into our bedrooms and decides how we are to be processed after death. Being cremated can increase global warming. Perhaps we will need to be freeze-dried and buried standing up.

This is the ultimate and maximum political theory- -- it gives politicians complete power over the whole of society. Governments cannot tax sunspots or cosmic rays or other natural phenomena, but there is now a rationale for taxing everything using environmentalist positions as the reason, even human activity to sustain life.

The political theory of anthropogenic global warming is the road leading to humanity's greatest enslavement; it also rejects man's creativity and reduces him to helplessness without political influence. This means less freedom, increased taxes and slavery under a political power whose extent we have never witnessed.
Computers, satellites, surveillance-cameras are all available to the potential tyrant, we can not escape.
I hope that the USA and China will cooperate to reject all of the proposed agreements made in Bali. This will hopefully save humanity from a terrible oppression by a political elite.

Consider a socialist government in Sweden under Mona Sahlin [leader of the Social Democratic (socialist) Party of Sweden] armed with the climate-theory's possibilities for political power. Such a government would leave no sector of life free from control or political intervention."

Additionally, there are other voices both of individuals and the very few political parties in Europe who are protesting the onslaught of totalitarianism. They need the moral support of those of us in the U.S. willing to speak out on behalf of individual liberty.

21st Century Heresy

In the early 17th century Galileo Galilei concluded that the Earth orbits around the Sun -- something we now take for granted, but was quite controversial in his time. There were powers that did not welcome Galileo’s questions or his scientific research. These early slaves to political correctness labeled Galileo’s ideas dangerous and his theories irresponsible. They branded him a skeptic of widely accepted truth. Eventually, Galileo was tried on charges of heresy and he was imprisoned and forced to recant his views and forbidden to defend or teach them.

Today, no serious person would defend the abuse of power used to silence and punish Galileo. Yet, that same political correctness is alive and well today. Prominent politicians, UN backed scientists, and environmental extremists argue that mankind is causing catastrophic global warming and demand that government impose draconian measures to save mankind from a never-ending parade of horrible disasters -- disease, floods, droughts, storms, heat, cold, famine, and pestilence.

But they don’t stop at merely advocating their doomsday theories. They work overtime to silence anyone who questions them. Some even advocate prison, professional banishment and violence against those who don’t tow the party line. Not much has changed since Galileo’s time.

Commentator, Ellen Goodman, recently wrote, “global warming deniers are now on a par with Holocaust deniers...” Currently, the most famous Holocaust denier is Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who has the curious distinction of simultaneously denying the Holocaust while advocating a second one. According to Goodman, those who question the flimsy science surrounding global warming are no different than Ahmadinejad. So much for civil discourse or serious scientific debate!

Environmental writer David Roberts wrote that for those who question global warming theories, “we should have war crimes trials for these bastards -- some sort of climate Nuremberg.” Of course, the Nuremberg trials were held after World War II to bring high-level Nazi war criminals to justice for their systematic torture and execution of millions of Jews and others Nazis labeled as political enemies. To Roberts, ideas contrary to his own and scientific debate are a crime -- a war crime no less!

Columnist George Monbiot, complaining about the airline industry’s use of fossil fuels, wrote: “[E]very time someone dies as a result of floods in Bangladesh, an airline executive should be dragged out of his office and drowned.” Monibot apparently believes that there were no floods in Bangladesh prior to the advent of commercial airlines -- a thoroughly silly notion. But his call to violence is revealing. Even Galileo’s tormentors did not threaten death.

Sinners Repent!!!

My only caveat with regard to the following essay is the alliance recently concluded between the collectivist left [who are the heirs to discredited political/economic Marxism] and the Islamists who have been conjoined in their project of defeating Western culture.

Conventional religions have been under attack for some years from liberals who have drifted into secular humanism and away from any devout belief in God. But as Margaret Mead discovered long ago, no culture has ever existed without some belief in a supernatural being. In today's world, the worship of the "environment" has filled the bill perfectly.

Green religion competes with old-style religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam. Environmentalists passionately believe its stories and predictions to be as accurate as fundamentalists view the Old and New Testaments or the Koran. While the old religions encouraged charitable activities toward others, the new Green religion grants dispensation by bicycling to work, recycling beer cans, and voting for the most "progressive" candidates.

When one observes the ubiquitous environmental movement overpowering all of society today, one might easily confuse it for a single spontaneous social movement or a mystic awakening, inspired perhaps by man's impact on the natural world or our constant increase of knowledge and awareness. But that would be wrong. When one looks under the surface, one sees specific and self-interested constituencies, each milking a popular movement for all they can get.

First, we have leftist intellectuals and their sock puppets, the politicians, who seek to run the lives of those they see as less intelligent and less capable than themselves. This is the "means justify the ends" crowd, who dominate governments from the lowest and most local level up to the U.S. Senate and the United Nations. For them, environmentalism is just a convenient end to justify the means they have long supported for other reasons: central control, more regulation, higher taxes, more power for them, less freedom for everyone else.

Collectivist Wet Dream

The proselytizing activities engaged in by adherents to the "warmista " religion have adopted the propaganda tactics of the recently discredited religion; Communism. One of their major tactics is the " band wagon" ploy:

Let me now try to identify some basic common features of the propagandistic algorithms [pun? Ed] of both the [environmentalist and communist] ideologies; it won't be too hard:
* They convey the message that the opposition doesn't exist.
* If the opposition does exist, it is composed of unsuccessful [losers] who have been defeated decades ago
* The members of the opposition are painted as being controlled by others, usually by demonized sources of power, with hints of corruption; a connection - even indirect connection - with these ultimate "sources of evil" is presented as a complete proof of wrongness.
* The opposition gets tags that are meant to be derogatory - capitalist, Zionist, deniers, renegades, contrarians, reactionary, burgeoisie, oil-funded etc.
* The opposition is presented as being against all the people - and all the people should agree and do agree with that; statements that everyone agrees and everyone keeps on supporting the official position are repeated all the time
* The opposition members are criticized for their very existence and for the tiniest deviations from the official ideology, to assure everyone else that one simply can't join them if he wants to survive.
* The opposition is claimed to misinterpret words and facts even though it is pretty obvious that it is the official party who is doing that.
* The opposing individuals are deconstructed one by one by carefully crafted ad hominem attacks.
* The propaganda openly states that a debate or a dialogue itself is unacceptable and no details of the opponents' opinions are ever analyzed
* Whenever it's possible, the opponents must be fired, denied government grants or otherwise harassed; a penetrating analysis of skeptics' personal lives and attempts to find anything questionable - even if it is completely unrelated to the dispute - is a standard tool of the propaganda.

A good explanation for why this has happened is that those collectivists left adrift by the implosion of the former Soviet bloc have been forced to transfer their efforts to an as yet undiscredited movement. The feminist movement is likewise undergoing an inexorable process of discreditation as a result of its having achieved all of its legitimate objectives and thus in order to continue to exist must rely on espousing more and more extremist and marginal issues.

Additionally, the former communists and their other collectivist kin have largely settled into various facets of the environmentalist movement due to their urge to oppose the free enterprise system. At the bottom of all the collectivist philosophies is a need to exercise control over their fellow man. What better method to advance this control than to dominate and limit the use of energy which is the force driving modern western society and consequently its culture.

Science is science. Consensus is politics. And close examination of many of those part of that "consensus" reveals they are not climatologists,but grant seekers.

Dr. Reid Bryson, University of Wisconsin Professor emeritus is the founding chairman of the department of meteorology at UW-Madison and of the Institute for Environmental Studies, now known as the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies. He retired in 1985, but has gone into the office almost every day since. He does it without pay.

"I have now worked for zero dollars since I retired, long enough that I have paid back the people of Wisconsin every cent they paid me to give me a wonderful, wonderful career. So we are even now. And I feel good about that," said Bryson.

So, if global warming isn't such a burning issue, why are thousands of scientists so concerned about it?

"Why are so many thousands not concerned about it?" Bryson shot back.

"There is a lot of money to be made in this," he added. "If you want to be an eminent scientist you have to have a lot of grad students and a lot of grants. You can't get grants unless you say, 'Oh global warming, yes, yes, carbon dioxide.'"

Speaking out against global warming is like being a heretic, Bryson noted.

So much for "Big Oil" financing the skeptics!

In truth, there is no validity to the assertion by the "warmistas" that "the science is settled".
"Government, at all levels, has a vested interest in scaring you into giving up your rights and freedom in favor of tyranny and controlling society. That, quite simply, is what 'global warming' is all about."

Global Warmista Update

The following is a letter to the editors of American Thinker which indicates that there are still citizens capable of rational thought.

In what is an example of 'technology may evolve, but human nature stays the same', it finally hit me: the Global Warming alarmists have the same anti-scientific mentality of the natives looking to make sacrifices to the gods so the volcano doesn't erupt.

In those not-so-ancient cultures, questioning the validity of the shaman's beliefs and prescriptions was heresy; today, the chief shaman is Al Gore, and to question the nature of warming is to invite ridicule and, increasingly, banishment from the village.

Here's some news: The volcano is going to erupt or not erupt, no matter how many live chickens, virgins, or billions of dollars in public wealth you (we) choose to sacrifice.

So the question is this: Will you take off your feathered hat long enough for the scientific community to have a legitimate scientific debate about this? Or are you too afraid of the public realizing that the shaman has no clothes?

Another way to look at it: Allow the [warmistas] to stifle economic productivity, and you've returned to a culture of human sacrifice. Not exactly progress, in my book, but we can let Al explain that one to the millions who will pay the price.

A North Pole expedition meant to bring attention to global warming was called off after one of the explorers got frostbite. The explorers, Ann Bancroft and Liv Arnesen, on Saturday called off what was intended to be a 530-mile trek across the Arctic Ocean after Arnesen suffered frostbite in three of her toes, and extreme cold temperatures drained the batteries in some of their electronic equipment.

"Ann said losing toes and going forward at all costs was never part of the journey," said Ann Atwood, who helped organize the expedition.

On Monday, the pair was at Canada's Ward Hunt Island, awaiting a plane to take them to Resolute, Canada, where they were to return to Minneapolis later this week.

Bancroft, 51, became the first woman to cross the North Pole on a 1986 expedition. She and Arnesen, 53, of Oslo, Norway, were the first women to ski across Antarctica in 2001.

But the latest trek got off to a bad start. The day they set off from Ward Hunt Island, a plane landing near the women hit their gear, punching a hole in Bancroft's sled and damaging one of Arnesen's snowshoes.

They repaired the snowshoe with binding from a ski, but Atwood said the patch job created pressure on Arnesen's left foot, which led to blisters that then turned into frostbite.

Then there was the cold — quite a bit colder, Atwood said, then Bancroft and Arnesen had expected. One night they measured the temperature inside their tent at 58 degrees below zero, and outside temperatures were exceeding 100 below zero at times, Atwood said.

"My first reaction when they called to say there were calling it off was that they just sounded really, really cold," Atwood said.

She said Bancroft and Arnesen were applying hot water bottles to Arnesen's foot every night, but had to wake up periodically because the bottles froze.

The explorers had planned to call in regular updates to school groups by satellite phone, and had planned online posts with photographic evidence of global warming. In contrast to Bancroft's 1986 trek across the Arctic with fellow Minnesota explorer Will Steger, this time she and Arnesen were prepared to don body suits and swim through areas where polar ice has melted.

Atwood said there was some irony that a trip to call attention to global warming was scuttled in part by extreme cold temperatures. "They were experiencing temperatures that weren't expected with global warming," Atwood said. "But one of the things we see with global warming is unpredictability."

I thought the global warming schtick was ALL about predictability. Silly me. It would however appear that the beautification of these two worthy females as saints in the Warmista religion will be postponed.

We have the release of the International Panel on Climate Change "report" (still referred to that way throughout the legacy media, despite the fact that the actual report isn't due out for several months yet).
The entire effort was obviously building up to the revelation of "What Must Be Done!!", to be delivered in tones of thunder to a world agonized to the breaking point. Instead it comes across as the standard piece of useless UN paper - of the type dealing with fisheries policy in the Maldives or primary schooling in Slovakia. What was the solution? Umm... what else, carbon taxes! Oh, and Al Gore paying himself "carbon offsets".

New Council of Nicaea

If there was heretofore any doubt that the emergence of a new religion is proceeding apace one need only compare the political drama playing out in Paris in the issuance of the recent summary by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) this week to the First Council of Nicaea convened in AD 325 by the Roman emperor Constantine. The Council of Nicaea resolved the the Arian vs Trinity schism in the Christian Church by a consensus in much the same fashion that a "consensus" has emerged that climate changes are driven by human activity. Politically designated Representatives "from 113 governments reviewed and revised the Summary line-by-line during the course of this week before adopting it and accepting the underlying report". In other words, no new data were presented. Only old data were re evaluated and adjusted to coincide with pre existing conclusions. There has not been rapid enough governmental action regulating human activity due to the challenges to the conclusions by skeptical scientists who have as yet not been bought off or intimidated by politicians. Like the Council of Nicaea's dealing with the Arians, the IPCC has designated the skeptics as heretics.

Dakota tribal wisdom says that when you discover you are riding a dead horse, as the warmista religion has been revealed to be, the best strategy is to dismount. However, in 21st century Marxism as well as United Nations climatology and environmental "science" (the new religion) other strategies in dealing with dead horses will be implemented including the following:
1. Buying a stronger whip.
2. Changing riders.
3. Saying things like "This is the way we always have ridden this horse."
4. Appointing a United Nations committee to study the horse.
5. Arranging to visit other sites to see how they ride dead horses.
6. Increasing the standards to qualify as a dead horse rider.
7. Appointing a tiger team to revive the dead horse.
8. Pass legislation declaring that "This horse is not dead." e.g. Senators Snowe and Rockefeller
9. Unilaterally declaring, "No horse is too dead to beat."
10. Blaming the horse's parents.
11. Providing additional funding to increase the horse's performance.
12. Do a Cost Analysis Study to see if government or UN labs can ride the horse if provided with additional grant funding.
13. Declare the horse is "better, faster and cheaper" dead.
14. Revise the performance requirements for horses.
And when all else fails declare the debate "over", and silence opposing views via prosecution for "heresy".
